This Week’s Message
Welcome back to the first full week of school. Last week SSS was doing orientation with some 230 excited new students. We are all looking forward welcoming them to GJS; let's have a great year! On that note, please notice the school vision and mission has been added to the top of the blog to highlight the importance of student learning and our role of developing life long learners.
This week’s post includes information on the first day, book distribution and MB set up. There will be some extra voluntary support sessions on Monday and Weds for MB setup and Microsoft 365. See the DP section for DP updates, and the MYP section below for updates on BQC, IDUs, and Personal Project. And remember, there are a number of support resources for you in the tabs at the top of this page.

Last year a lot of work was put in by departments preparing the IB Self Study. Thank you all very much for that!
The bulk of the work that departments and teachers had to do is over, but the process is not finished. This semester Ibu Tamara will be organizing focus groups for the WASC portion. Coordinators will be collating work and asking for more information from departments as is needed. The final report needs to be done by December so it can be sent in by January for the April visit.
The purpose of the visit and the self-study to help us improve in our quest to develop life long learners.

Semester 2 last year we got the report back for the work we sent last October 2016. This will be shared with the Department Heads to help guide future planning.
Here is an excerpt from the overall feedback:
Please note, many of the units reviewed are already outdated because we made so much progress last year with units, therefore the theme of the feedback should be considered over the actual content.
Here is an excerpt from the overall feedback:
Most of the teachers at Global Jaya School have developed rich statements of inquiry that have the potential to support transferable understanding and direct purposeful learning. The statements of inquiry are communicated in student-friendly language that invites inquiry and engagement.
The units reviewed demonstrate that most teachers are familiar with the current subject guides and include prescribed concepts, contexts and some approaches to learning skills in their planning.
Please note, many of the units reviewed are already outdated because we made so much progress last year with units, therefore the theme of the feedback should be considered over the actual content.
Resources: One theme that appeared often was about the importance storing resources in the unit planner.
Reflection: Another theme is the importance of providing full and complete explanations of what is happening in the unit, including in the reflection sections.
In June many departments got the BQC units into the IB office (Thank you!). They will be sorted and collated, then the Departments will complete the checklist self-assessment. The units and self-assessment will be sent in during September.
IDU
The Interdisciplinary Unit steering committee currently includes Callie, Laili, Tofan, Pak Z, and Dani. Thank you for volunteering your time and expertise. We are open to new volunteers as we start the year. If you are interested contact, Pak Patrick.
The IDU Steering Committee will meet this week in the IB office on Friday at 2:50
One item on the agenda is to come up with a better name than the IDUSC. We are open to suggestions.

Creative problem solver. Because that is the goal of education: so that our student can be a creative problem solver for the world they live in.
