This Week’s Message

It is a uniquely busy and exciting time of year with exams, reports, completion of the semester work and preparing for semester 2. Please see the semester information tab above for information on exams and report timelines.

Departments have been working to collect samples of Assessed work for MYP and DP and Unit plans for DP. We thank you for the effort that has gone into this, please talk to your HOD or Pak Ram or Patrick if you have questions.

Also, as we prepare for semester grades, please see the section below on how to determine semester grades in MYP. It can be found in the MYP-DP Teacher guide Click Here and the MYP Parent-Student Guide.

This month the IB is closing down the OCC, and switching to MyIB. For an IB video guide to this click here https://vimeo.com/242120398 for a guide to the PRC

Information for year 10

Many of you noticed the excitement Thursday as some of the students showed off their Personal Project. Year 10 just submitted their interim submission of the Personal Project Report, including evidence of the product. We had almost ALL year 10 students submit this. CONGRATULATIONS! The students could not have experienced this success without your support! This means they are two-thirds of the way to the PP finish line.

Upcoming for year 10
  • Monday they are handing in their Service and Action Journal. When this Journal is handed in, Y 10 is DONE with SA for the year!
  • Then they should focus on their exams.
  • After exams, they should focus on completing the PP Report.

After the 3rd week of January, the Year 10 students are all done with PP and SA.

End of Semester MYP Grade

Determining the final level of achievement for a criteria- MYP

In order to determine the final level of achievement for a criteria at the end of a semester, the following questions should be asked:

a. What does the most recent evidence tell us about the student’s level of achievement?
b. What is the “Highest sustained achievement” in that criterion since the beginning of                        the year?
c. In your best professional judgment, based on all available evidence, which grade level descriptor best fits the student achievement in this criterion at this time?
Below are examples of summative grades for a specific criteria, and how the final level of achievement for that criterion were determined.
Examples: Criteria C

3
4
3
Final Level: 3
Best sustained + most recent evidence. There is no progression of improvement. 4 was not sustained, three is the highest sustained level.

2
4
5
Final Level: 5
First mark is the start of a clear progression towards the current achievement of 5, the most recent evidence. Assuming learning continuums and formative assessment also demonstrated this progression, 5 would be appropriate. If not 4, because 5 has not yet been sustained, and the progression is not fully supported by other work.

5
5
2
Final Level: 5
Best sustained overrides most recent. Assuming the formative assessment and learning continuums demonstrated sustained achievement in this descriptor, the 3 could be considered “Anomalous”.  However, if the summative 3 is matched by formative assessments and learning continuums that show the 5 is not sustained and the 3 is not anomalous, a 4 could be considered.

The grades are NOT an average of the work for the semester, they represent the 'best-fit' level of achievement. See the chart below from the PD session on this earlier this year.

See the GJS MYP-DP Guide Pgs. 17-23 for more details.

Personal Project Corner

You can find a copy of the Personal Project Teacher companion Here or click the Personal Project Tab above.

Students submitted their interim report including evidence of product. They have now been told they should not worry about or work on PP until after exams.

When they do return their focus to PP, they should not work on the PRODUCT, they should finish the report, which is already more than halfway done.

In January we will have another Standardization meeting to take a more in-depth look at the criteria before starting to grade in the teams that were established earlier this year.

Work you do on PP as a supervisor or on a grading team can be considered in the PGD. It could relate to any of the following three: Professionalism, Professional Knowledge, Assessment.
