This Week’s Message

We had an eventful week last week with the "days of significance" International Peace Day Assembly, the Y 12 Assembly, and musical performances. A group of new teachers just finished their month-long MYP Online workshop and many classes are fully involved in assessments. All of these activities are a testament to the dedication of the whole school community to student learning.

We are nearing the end of Term 1.
  • This week all 'generic comments' should be sent from the HOD to the Principals
  • All Grades and Comments must be on MB by Oct 2
  • All MYP Classes must have at least one criteria graded
  • ALL MYP Reports will include a tick box on ATL Organization (New This Year)
  • Be sure the criteria reported on matches the generic class comment. If the comment says A was graded, be sure an A grade is included, etc.
See the semester information tab above for more details.

This week we will have a focus on our Professional Growth and Development Plans. To help with this week's focus on instructional practice for the PGD, please see the "Walk Through" tab above for examples of best practice.

Last Weds we were introduced to some additional platforms for our 'Digital Horizons'. We were asked to set up an account for MY ib. Please see emails from Pak Ram for more information.

We were also introduced to the GJS Curriculum Web Site where we will be asked to record the PD we receive. Here is a link http://sites.google.com/site/gjscurriculum/

MYP: The IB office needs to gather information on all teachers’ qualifications and IB authorized PD for both DP and MYP. Pak Ram has sent a link to a form to be filled for DP teachers. When this stage of gathering information is complete, a link will be sent to all teachers teaching MYP.

ASSESSMENT: We are starting the time of year when a number of MYP assessments are being done. HODs are being asked to collect:
  • Three samples of assessed work for each subject group year level
  • including task sheet
  • including student work
  • including feedback and grade
Please keep this in mind as you are assessing students work.

New at Global Jaya: The Subject Group Overviews are on the school web page for the whole school community http://www.globaljaya.com/index.php/2014-09-16-01-18-19/middle-school-programme

MYP FAQ:

Question
Where to find the Answer
How many assessments need to be done in MYP by the end of a semester?
See P 22 of the MYP DP guide and the Semester Information tab above.

Answer: each criterion assessed at least one time each semester.

What is the procedure for accepting late work?
See P 19 of the MYP DP Guide.

Answer: collect work in stages. If a student fails to hand in the final work at the end, grade the work you have.

Can I take a point off for work being late?
See P 20 of the MYP DP Guide “inappropriate grading practices” (the title of the section alone should help answer the question)

Answer: NO

When will the exams be this semester? Who takes exams?
See the Semester information tab above.

Answer: Y7 and 8 will not take the semester exam. Be sure you have the correct number of assessment done in place of the exam so each criterion is assessed at least once.

Do we use MLA 7 or MLA8?
See p 30
Answer: We use MLA 8. This includes the URL for online sources, MLA 7 does not. IB wants the URL.

Please make use of the MYP DP Guide and the information on this blog to help guide your planning. The purpose of this blog is not just to give you information you need, but to give you information you can use to bring the school mission to life.
