This Week’s Message

Welcome back to the final week of Term 1. As we prepare for Mid Semester Conferences (MSC) the Y 11 students are visiting Universities in the UK, and Year 10 students have just returned from their year level bonding and IDU trip.

A ‘Parent-Student Guide to MYP’ has just been released to the parent community using the school web page and various social media. Please see the document below. Also, new this week, there is a tab on the top of this page for the Global Jaya Curriculum web page. See the “New this week” Section below.

From Pak Steve, MSC Preparation

Greetings! Happy MSC Week! Seriously, I love parent conferences and always have. They are a great opportunity to reinforce the community aspect of education. Everybody has their own approach to parent meetings--some of you will come with data, others with anecdotes, and others with examples of work, while you overachievers will try to do all three and more in the ten minutes you are allotted per parent. Above all else, there are two pieces of advice I can give:
  1. Keep it positive. This doesn't mean every kid is predicated a 7. It means every student, even the most challenging (and those challenges should be directly and confidently addressed too), has strengths and can succeed.
  2. Make it about the kid, not the class. The best conferences are specific, concise and have student progress in mind.
For more tips, check the links below.

The “Teachhub” has some good points to look at about being prepared and keeping it positive

The Kids Health article below has a good section on “Teacher talk” -using jargon, try to avoid jargon.

NEW THIS WEEK

The GJS  ‘Parent-Student Guide to MYP’ has just been released to the parent community using the school web page and various social media. This is similar to the GJS MYP-DP Teacher Guide, providing parents with information such as:
  • What is in the term report
  • How are assignments graded
  • How is the semester grade determined
  • How is late work graded
  • Where and when can I find the grades for work my child submitted

At the top of this page, you will see a new tab for the GJS Curriculum Web Page.

Under Professional Development, there are two "to-do" surveys following PD:

·        PD Recording - this adds your PD record to the whole school database

·        PD Reflection - this will create a PD reflection report of your experience

ACTION: If you have done IB PD This Year, please fill in both the “Recording” so there is a record of it, and “Reflection” so we know how to take future action based on the PD.

MYP:

BQC
At the end of last year, HODs gathered two units for BQC. These are currently being shared with the IB. We can expect feedback in Dec.

IDU Corner.
The IDU team has been meeting weekly since April putting together plans for this year.

The Year 7 IDU is complete and is being graded.
The Y 10 Students just got back from their trip and will be completing the IDU common task.

Have a great week,

Patrick and Ram
